Happy International Women's Day 2022


Let’s talk about gender equality. What is it and why do we need it?


Gender equality is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. Gender equality prevents violence against women and girls. It's essential for economic prosperity. Societies that value women and men as equal are safer and healthier.


Gender equality in a workplace is something we’re all not used to hear. The shortage of opportunities and experiences, to different amount of wages. But, in SMM we’ve been breaking the stereotype!


There must be a sense of familiarity when it comes to gender equality. But, what about gender equality in a workplace? We’ve asked some of our women employees namely Lidya Lumenta (LL) – Legal Specialist, Wening Wijayanti (WW) – HRGA Head PT Borneo Indobara, and Emyliana Manurung (EM) – Operational & Financial Audit Manager about gender equality in a workplace and their experience here.


Q: What is gender equality from your perspective and and why is it important?

LL: “Gender equality in the world of work means the openness of opportunities for anyone regardless of one's gender. For example, the provision of equal opportunities for each individual to develop and make a career. It’s important because it can give awareness that everyone has the same opportunities and rights, so that anyone can maximize the potential that exists in them and could make a meaningful contribution to the wider community.

During my time at SMM, I was able to feel the implementation of gender equality, where it inspired me to always give my best and develop the widest potential.”


Q: What is gender equality from your perspective and and why is it important?

WW: “I work in a mining company that can be said, filled with the majority of male. This gender role is very much felt. And according to my personal experience during my time working, I've never experienced that I don't get assignments and opportunities because I'm a woman. What I feel is that this company has given me the same opportunities as my male colleagues in doing our job and there is no limit to whether I am a male nor female. And that is the importance of gender equality. To give the same exact opportunities and experience without looking which gender you have.”


Q: What is gender equality from your perspective and and why is it important?

EM: “Gender equality in the world of work is the most basic thing to apply. The most tangible implementation is to provide equal opportunities in work, career development, self-development and equal treatment in working regardless of gender differences. Some research mentioned that the role of women in corporate management positions can improve the company's business significantly so that the diversity of gender positions in company management becomes an excellent thing to apply especially to develop the business of Sinar Mas Mining company.”
